Since settlement of the colonies, "We the people" have had local control of schools, standards, curriculum and testing. However, as many are aware, the West Virginia board of education consistently inserts itself in overriding local control.
Sadly, the performance of West Virginia schools clearly demonstrates the negative result of their decisions. If I recall, we got to the moon and developed the SR-71 on elementary educations obtained and approved locally.
Common Core standards have been accepted by the state school board. Many parents are unaware that the standards are a national curriculum to be administered by the U.S. Department of Education.
Common Core is the state board of education on steroids. Although it is claimed they were developed by the states, they were, in fact, written and developed by an organization called Achieve Inc.
The effort was funded by the Gates Foundation, contracted for by the National Governors Association and the chief council for state schools (both non-profits in Washington D.C.), and accepted by the state board, on your behalf of course.
The standards are copyrighted to the NGA and changes are limited, restricting your input into your child's educational standards or subjects. It's not too late to reclaim control of education. Take action and make sure education stays local.
W.Va. Sen. Donna Boley is leading the effort to remove Common Core standards. Contact your state legislature representatives and tell them to support the effort to return local control to our schools. Do it for your kids and grandchildren.
