n Social Security has been broken since it was opened up under Lyndon Johnson and his Congress to people that weren't elderly and never paid into it. It was never designed, nor should it have ever been used, for a catchall. It should be for only the elderly and the severely disabled. Everyone else should be put to work.
n The sources for my statement about Social Security having a surplus of $2.7 trillion are the official Social Security website and the Institute for Public Accuracy website, among others. The liars telling you that Social Security is broke think that by scaring the American public they will get their hands on the money.
n I knew this was coming. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, Democrat from Oregon, has proposed about a 15-cent hike to the federal gasoline tax and even more on diesel. So that would make the gasoline tax for federal and state together pushing 70 cents a gallon in West Virginia. The workingman can't catch a break.
n I read a lot of vents about the care of dogs and cats. The animal shelter is full and always is in need of money. I have a simple solution. Raise the dog tax to at least $50 a year and enforce it by picking up any dog that doesn't have a collar and tag. Most dog owners do not pay the small tax we now have because it is not enforced.
n I have been a paid up member of AARP for many years. However, I continually receive notices to renew my membership or to start a new one. I suppose they think old people forget. Thinking about joining the conservative alternative and see how they do before I get so old that I really do forget.
n Though I am among a dwindling minority in this state who actually value keeping a car clean, is there any way the DOH could ease up on the road salt? We had a so-called snowstorm conjured up by the news media last week that amounted to little more than a heavy frost, and trucks were spreading salt in 40-degree weather on a road that already had been treated with a winter's supply of product.
n While I fully support unfettered access to food, shelter and clothing by those who insist they need to be on the government dole, my tax dollars should not be going to buy energy drinks, satellite television and outfits from Hollister. If those folks cannot accept that, then they are free to give it up and go to work.
n Why should President Obama be impeached? The president's job is to execute the laws enacted by Congress. Obama has altered and changed laws on Obamacare, EPA regulations and immigration without Congressional approval. He has been picking and choosing which laws to enforce and which ones to ignore. A president can't refuse to enforce a law just because he doesn't like it.
n Of course Nancy Pelosi said we have to pass it to see what's in it. If you think any member of Congress reads bills before they're passed, you're dreaming.
n Thanks to NBC and Wal-Mart for The Sound Of Music. What a wonderfully positive and artistic show to cheer us up.
n Rush Limbaugh is an ugly pile of hateful crud this world could well have done without.
n With Obama's war on coal, why in the world are wind farms allowed to exist in West Virginia? Stupid.
