In truth, it's been this way for even longer.
"Two weeks ago I was at the USF-Notre Dame game and literally during the whole game the whole Big XII thing was unfolding," he said.
Notre Dame's sports information director, Bernie Cafarelli, got Marinatto to a private area with a landline and the commissioner spent the game on the phone while the Bulls earned a big win for the conference.
"It was unfolding before our very eyes," he said. "I find myself right now doing the same."
Marinatto, with red eyes and an exasperated expression, said this has been a routine for a while now and there's just one way to handle the stories as they appear and develop.
"We try to respond to every situation, whether it's a tweet or a phone call or whatnot," he said. "We try to verify whether or not the situation is true. There have been so many over the last two years."
Most, he said, are false, but they must be treated as though they could be true.
"No question," he said. "There was a story last week about Notre Dame and Texas (going to the ACC) and everyone was reporting it as almost factual. Then it was traced back to a blog in Cleveland. It had no merit to it, but we had to check it out."
