Conference USA announces five additions
Conference USA has finalized membership agreements with five schools, the league announced Friday.
Charlotte, FIU, Louisiana Tech, North Texas and UTSA will join the league in all sports in 2013.
"We are excited about adding these new members as part of our bold strategy that focuses on growing institutions in large media markets," Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky said. "There is a tremendous upside here. This is an opportunity for us to add a mixture of established and emerging programs. We also remain committed to divisional scheduling models that are student-athlete and fan-friendly. The more we analyzed it, the more it made sense."
The Friday morning announced also stated that "Conference USA and the Mountain West will continue to discuss a future affiliation that could begin as early as 2013."
There could be more expansion in both leagues.
Conference USA is at 13 schools after Friday's additions. The league, which includes Marshall, was going to be down to eight schools after the 2012-13 academic year. This year will be the final year of participate for Houston, Memphis, Southern Methodist and UCF. All four schools are headed for the Big East in 2013.
