Prep football: Logan gets big lead, holds off Winfield

WINFIELD, W.Va. - Winfield football Coach Craig Snyder expressed concern about his secondary in preparations for facing visiting Logan on Friday night.

Snyder's trepidation was well founded. Logan quarterback Chris Marcum threw for 253 yards in the first half alone, and the Wildcats topped the Generals 38-28 in a game that left both teams' coaches yearning for the clubs to be able to string together four quarters of quality football.

Marcum, who threw first-half touchdown passes of 7, 87, 30 and 2 yards, finished with 335 yards in the win, which upped Logan's record to 5-1.

Winfield, which was outgained 292-49 in the first half, dropped to 2-4.

"They just played like a cover three on us, which is kind of hard to do against a spread offense," Marcum said. "That was a big part of the game.

"That was our main offense. We threw in a little extra stuff but nothing crazy. I was kind of surprised we were able to get up that big early, especially with how the field is, you know: wet, kind of muddy. We went to the air a lot."

Logan led 32-6 at halftime, helped in part by Brynden Street's 54-yard interception return for a touchdown midway through the second quarter. Little, if anything, worked offensively for Winfield before the game was already decided. Junior quarterback Toby Show completed just 5 of 17 first-half passes, and the Generals squandered two separate opportunities to score while starting dives inside the Logan 30-yard line.

"We've got to figure out how to play two halves of football," said Snyder, whose team had two first downs in the first half before gaining 167 total yards and 12 first downs after halftime.

"It's happened in other games too, but when you face a team like Logan the mistakes mount and it becomes too much to overcome."

Marcum hit Josh Rein for a 7-yard touchdown to open the scoring, then - after a John Hathaway punt pinned the Wildcats in at their own 7-yard line following Winfield's opening drive - the 6-foot-2 senior found Khaleel Reynolds over the middle in what Reynolds turned into an 87-yard score.

Marcum connected with Street on a screen pass that the running back turned into a 30-yard TD, and Street picked off Winfield junior quarterback Toby Show on the Generals' next play from scrimmage to let the Winfield homecoming crowd know the rout was on.

But like many prep teams that get out to a large halftime lead, Logan lost its focus a bit after halftime. Winfield took advantage with a 5-yard scoring run by Seth Lewis to cap the Generals' opening possession of the third quarter.

Wildcat turnovers helped Winfield back in the game. The teams traded scores in the third quarter, but Logan lost four of six fumbles in the game, and was flagged for 111 penalty yards, most of which came in the second half.

"We've got to learn to hang on to the football and play a complete game," Logan Coach Gary Mullins said. "We played well in the first half, but - I don't know if it was the rain or if we're going to let the weather be an excuse every time we don't play well, I don't know. We've got to play better, though."

Show, who had just 40 passing yards in the first half, was 10-of-22 in the second half for 133 yards and a touchdown. He connected with Logan Kennedy for a 9-yard score in the first half, then hooked up with Hathaway for a 14-yard TD with 9:15 left in the game for a second TD.

Lewis, who entered the game with 616 rushing yards, was held to 20 yards on 13 carries. Each team was led on the ground by its quarterback, with Marcum gaining 48 yards on 17 carries, and Show carrying the ball eight times for 24 yards.
