Prep football: Haley's big plays lead Capital past Riverside

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Coming off two consecutive losses and facing a brutal schedule the rest of the regular season, Capital was in desperate need of a victory Friday night.
Only leading Riverside (1-5) by four points late in the second quarter, it looked as though the Cougars had a huge battle on their hands against the upstart Warriors heading into halftime.
And then, Capital caught lightning in a bottle once again.
On the final play of the first half, Riverside quarterback Trevor Rumberg attempted a hail Mary pass from the Capital 47-yard line, but it was intercepted by Kashaun Haley, who then zig-zagged his way across the field for a critical 95-yard touchwodn return for the Cougars.
The play was a backbreaker for Riverside, as Capital used the huge momentum swing to ease past the Warriors in the second half and earn a 35-16 victory at UC Stadium in Charleston.
"It was a big win, coming off two straight losses," Haley said. "It was good for us because I thought it may have brought us down but we had a good week of practice and brought it out onto the field."
Capital Coach Jon Carpenter said the win was a dose of badly needed medicine.
"It was huge, especially as young as we are," Carpenter said. "We dress one senior. I've never heard of that. We've had some tough times but we have learned from it. We are getting a mountain full of experience here."
Capital, ranked 18th in the latest SSAC Class AAA playoff ratings, improved to 4-2. The Cougars currently sit two spots out of the final playoff spot and their final four games of the season are against top 11 teams, including three of the top five.
Capital plays host to No. 1 Cabell Midland next Friday at home.
Capital got outgained in the game 374-269 in total yards and 18-10 in first downs but used the huge return by Haley, who also returned a punt return 92 yards midway through the third quarter, to win going away
Haley understood the importance of scores, especially the INT return on which he intercepted the pass near the left sideline, raced across the field, and then back again.
"It was big," Haley said. "If I wouldn't have got that, the score wouldn't have been like that. It was big for us to kick the lead up. At first I thought I was going to get caught. I ran out of breath. I knew I had to push it for the team. When I got into the end zone, I fell. I was so tired."
Riverside Coach Ralph Hensley was less than thrilled with the tackling of the Warriors on Haley's key plays.
"We just don't tackle and I don't know why," Hensley said. We work on it all the time. Maybe we work on it too much. We work on it Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. It kind of kills you."
Haley also scored on a 68-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and had two punt returns go for touchdowns before getting called back for penalties on the Cougars. He finished the night with 133 yards on just seven carries. James Richmond added 137 yards and two touchdown runs.
Rumberg finished the night with 250 yards passing, including a touchdown run and pass for Riverside. Marcus Reed caught eight of the passes for 129 yards and a score.
