Girls basketball: St. Albans gets big win over South Charleston

St. Albans girls basketball Coach Scott James has been waiting a long time for the moment he got to enjoy Wednesday night.

Ten years to be exact.

After his Red Dragons knocked off South Charleston 38-32 at home, it marked the first time James and St. Albans had beaten the Black Eagles (7-7).

"It's a win I'll never forget," James said. "It really is. In my 10 years here, it's my first win over South Charleston. I'm so proud of the girls. We have now beaten every team in the conference, except for Huntington."

"It was a great win," St. Albans leading scorer Breanna Propst said. "We haven't beat this team (SC). We are excited. We went out there, worked hard, and I'm glad we won. I think we did pretty good."

The milestone victory for James and the Red Dragons (8-8) was even more impressive, considering the fact they were playing without two of their normal starters in Lexie Cooper and Addison Oliver.

"It's super impressive," James said. "You always can tell a character of a team and individuals when adversity hits. We had adversity tonight. We didn't dwell on it. We started three freshmen. The girls did a great job."

Freshman Katelyn Fields stepped into the starting lineup for the first time, and made the most of her opportunity, just missing double digit rebounds with nine.

She admitted to being a nervous wreck.

"This is my first time starting a varsity game," Fields said. "To be honest, I stressed about it all day. When I got out there, I just played my game. I went from nervous, to excited, to jumping for joy at the end. I'm happy to be able to help out my team."

James was impressed with the performance he got from Fields in her first start.

"I said 'Katelyn, just relax, and don't play like a freshman. Just go out there and have fun'. She comes to work every day. She brings her lunch pale. She works hard at it and did a tremendous job for us tonight."

Despite being shorthanded, James got multiple contributions besides Fields in earning his first ever victory over SC.

Propst, who averages 18 points a game, finished with 16 points and eight rebounds while her sister, Kaitlyn, added seven points and eight rebounds.

Also, with the Red Dragons clinging to a 30-29 lead midway through the fourth quarter, Cameron Davis hit a lay-up for St. Albans and Torri Wilson hit a corner jumper for her only points of the game. The Black Eagles were outscored 8-3 down the stretch.

"Cameron has played very good ball for us," James said. "She has started a couple games, and doesn't want to lose her position. Torri does an excellent job at the point for a freshman, and the Propst sisters were fantastic tonight. Overall, it was a great team win."

Meanwhile, Black Eagle Coach John Testa was left disappointed and looking for answers.

"It's frustrating and we are still trying to do some soul searching," Testa said. "We are in some downs right now. We are really young and a lot of it has to do with the perception of ourselves. It's day and night with us. I never know, it's a crap shoot."

Lina Villanueva led SC with 15 points while leading scorer, freshman Taliah Cashwell, added 10 points.
