Boys basketball: Black Eagles roll to 39th consecutive win in MSAC

South Charleston's third-quarter performance Tuesday night at Capital High School left Cougars' Coach Carl Clark speechless.

After only leading 31-28 at halftime, the Black Eagles came out firing on all cylinders in the third quarter, forcing 10 Capital turnovers and outscoring the Cougars 25-5 en route to a 74-51 victory.

The victory improves Class AAA No. 2 South Charleston's record to 17-1 with its 11th consecutive win. The Black Eagles have won 39 straight Mountain State Athletic Conference games.

"No comment," said Clark, before heading off to the Capital locker room after the game.

Just like Clark at the end of the game, South Charleston Coach Vic Herbert wasn't pleased at halftime, and let his Black Eagles know about it.

"Me and the coaches about had a coronary at halftime," Herbert said. "We were up in them about as hard as you can. These kids are young guys. Sometimes they don't realize the significance of a game. This is Capital. It's a rival game.

"That first half, they gave us all we wanted."

Herbert's tirade at halftime clearly worked, changing his mood after the game.

"I guess they got the message," he said. "It was a very, very bad first half but was a heck of a second half. It was huge. We took the ball from them quite a bit and looked pretty good. That was pretty big."

The South Charleston players agreed that the halftime speech received from Herbert and the Black Eagle coaches made the difference.

"Coach came in and got in us," said South Charleston senior Trevond Reese, who had nine points, eight rebounds, and six assists. "We responded to it. We can't come out like that and expect to win the championship."

South Charleston sophomore A.D. Cunningham agreed.

"I think it had to be the halftime speech," said Cunningham, who added 13 points, eight rebounds, and four steals. "They gave us their best shot in the first half. If we are sluggish, he gets in there, and yells at us. We go back out and do what he asks us to do."

It was all SC in the second half, thanks in part to their pressure defense. The Black Eagles forced four Capital turnovers in the first 2:30 of the third quarter to push their three-point halftime lead to 39-29.

SC continued to stymie the Cougar offense, forcing 10 Capital turnovers in the decisive quarter. The Black Eagles went on a 14-0 run to extend their lead to 53-31, and the rout was on.

"That's what South Charleston basketball is all about," Reese said. "If we don't defend, we aren't going to play. It's as simple as that. If we get steals, it leads to fast breaks and easy basket. It was pretty impressive. We knew we had to get it rolling in the third quarter."

"The third quarter was impressive," Cunningham said. "We had to come out and do that so it wouldn't be a dog fight. Defense is what has been getting us our wins. The turnovers were very big. If we wouldn't have had them, it could have been a lot closer. They changed the game."

South Charleston showed balance with four players in double figures, and Reese just missed being the fifth with nine points. Ra'Shaud Kincaid led the way with 16 points, while Cunningham had 13, and Hunter Moles and Devon Harris added 11 each. Four Black Eagles had at least seven rebounds.

"That's the way this team has been all year long," Herbert said. "They don't care who scores or gets the glory. They just go out there and find the guy whose night it's going to be and feed them the ball, and get them going."

Carrington Morris led Capital with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
