Prep basketball: Kanawha Valley coaches rank Giles as top varsity official

Clinton Giles said that basketball coaches and players know what they get when he slips on the black and white striped shirt and steps onto the basketball court.

"I do know this," Giles said. "When a coach sees me walking into a gym, they say, 'There's Clinton Giles, I don't have to worry about the officiating tonight.'

"They know I'll be fair and impartial in an appropriate manner."

Kanawha Valley coaches rated Giles as the top official among the most-used referees on the West Virginia Southern Board of Approved Officials.

The 13 varsity boys basketball coaches in the Valley were asked to rate the officials on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis. The points were tabulated with the total divided by the number of coaches who voted for that particular official to determine the average. Three coaches did not return a ratings sheet. Only officials who received votes from at least half of the 10 voting coaches were included.

Giles received a score of 5 from seven of the coaches, giving him the highest average and one of only four of the 43 officials who had an average of at least 4.

"I like Clinton because he's in control of the playing floor," said Fred Aldridge, the commissioner of the Mountain State Athletic Conference who schedules officials for most of the Kanawha Valley varsity teams. "He hustles, he's had experience as an athlete, he's played the game, he understands the game and he has a good demeanor about him."

Other officials receiving a score of 4 or higher were Ken Samms, the head baseball coach at South Charleston High School; David Maraman; and Tom Riggan, an assistant baseball coach at South Charleston.

Giles was the only official to receive a rating of 5 from seven of the 10 coaches. Samms and Maraman each received six ratings of 5.

While some of the officials didn't receive high scores, Aldridge said it's a job he wouldn't want to have.

"It is one of the toughest things you can do," Aldridge said.

Coaches are discouraged, and often reprimanded, from commenting about poor officiating.

However, Hurricane Coach Lance Sutherland had plenty of good things to say about Giles.

"I think that he treats you like a normal human being," Sutherland said. "You can't really yell at him, but you can voice displeasure to him and he doesn't take it personally."

Giles, 62, is in his 27th season officiating basketball. He said his experience wearing the stripes, in addition to his time as an athlete, has served him well in his capacity as an official.

"I'm a former athlete, coach, athletic administrator and official now," Giles said. "I understand the game from a number of levels, intimately. I have two degrees in physical education."

As the principal at Capital High School, there also has been a perception that he isn't unbiased when officiating games against rival schools.

"I don't dwell on it," Giles said. "I want it to be that I'm perceived as a person of integrity. I'm honest and fair and I really don't care who wins the game. Your calls in the first quarter should be consistent with your calls in the fourth quarter. You hear people yell in the beginning of a game, 'Let them play,' then, in the fourth, 'Call the foul.' Human beings are somewhat suspicious."

That's obviously not the case with coaches in the Kanawha Valley, Sutherland being one of them.

"He's no different on the court than he is off the court," Sutherland said. "That's what you want out of an official and Chuck Green is the same way.

"(Clinton) actually did my games when I was at Winfield Middle School back in 1994. He was doing high school games then, but he would always take my middle school games if I called him.

"That's the type of guy he is. I have the utmost respect for him."
