Top of the 2nd: Scott advances to sectional final
LOGAN, W.Va. - Matt Dolan scored 15 points to lead Scott to a 56-54 win over Mingo Central in boys Class AA Region 4, Section 2 semifinal play at Willie Akers Arena in Logan on Thursday.
Cody Brown added 14 points and Logan Webb 11 for Scott, which improved to 14-9.
For Mingo Central (13-10), Julius Hatcher had a team-high 20 points, followed by Austin Banks' 15 points.
Scott will face Tolsia for the sectional title at 7 p.m., Saturday.
Defending champion Westside gets top seed
Westside High School has received the top seed for next week's Class AA girls basketball state tournament, the Secondary School Activities Commission announced Thursday.
The Renegades (23-1), who beat Scott in the 2012 state championship game to clinch their first state title, will play fellow Region 3 representative and No. 8 seed PikeView (14-10) in a quarterfinal game at 5:30 p.m. next Thursday at the Charleston Civic Center.
The Class AA field is dominated by teams from the Big 10 Conference, led by 2012 Class AAA runner-up and No. 2 seed Bridgeport (22-2). The Indians play No. 7 seed and Big 10 member Lincoln (16-9) in the quarterfinals after beating them three times already this season.
Fairmont Senior (18-6) received the No. 5 seed and North Marion (18-4) is seeded sixth. Three of the Big 10 teams in the tournament competed in Class AAA last year. The Polar Bears play fourth-seeded Clay County (18-6) in the quarterfinals while North Marion plays No. 3 seed Nicholas County (20-3).
Dates changed for two Marshall football games
Conference USA announced schedule changes for three football games Thursday, two of them involving Marshall. The Thundering Herd's game at Middle Tennessee was moved to Thursday, Oct. 24, while its game at Tulsa was moved to Thursday, Nov. 14.
Both of Marshall's games had been scheduled for Saturdays. The moves were made to accommodate national television, according to the conference. Game times and networks will be announced later. C-USA also announced that Iowa State's game at Tulsa would be rescheduled to Thursday, Sept. 26.
WVSU tennis team set for match at Greenbrier
The West Virginia State University women's tennis team will face Radford at 1 p.m., Sunday at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs.
The Yellow Jackets are coming off a fall season in which they finished 15-0 while winning the West Virginia Conference regular season and tournament championships. Junior Andreea Slusarciuc and freshmen Brittany Franco and Diano Cotoros were named to the All-WVC team, with Franco being honored as the conference freshman of the year.
State is currently ranked 36th in the NCAA's Division II.
Radford, a Division I member school from the Big South Conference, finished last season with a 17-7 record.
Herd softball team set to open home schedule
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall softball team will play host to the Marshall Invitational today through Sunday at Dot Hicks Softball Field.
The Thundering Herd (6-9) welcomes Robert Morris (4-2), Eastern Illinois (4-4) and Buffalo (2-7) to the tournament after it took part in the Spartan Classic in Greensboro, N.C., last weekend.
The Marshall Invitational will continue through Sunday. The school did not announce pairings or start times Thursday.
