State tournament: Parkersburg South runs away with crown

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Welcome back to the throne, Parkersburg South.

The Patriots (20-7) forcibly took back their title as Queens of West Virginia big-school girls basketball Saturday night, thumping upstart Logan (17-10) 58-34 in the Class AAA state championship game at the Charleston Civic Center.

Sophomore guard Keya Bartlett hit three 3-pointers in a span of less than a minute in the third quarter, fueling a 21-2 that turned a healthy Patriot lead into a downright rout. Bartlett had seven 3s in the game, one shy of the single-game tournament record. She led all players with 26 points.

Bartlett did set a new standard for 3-pointers in a tournament, with 14. In a postgame statement that somewhat reflected South's youth, Bartlett said the win - and the record - is anything but the finish line for the team.

"It's awesome, and I'm going to break it next year," she said of the record.

South led 24-16 at halftime, and Patriots Coach Scott Stephens said that through the course of the third quarter he could sense Logan losing its legs.

"They're a good team but I think they got a little tired," he said.

Both teams were playing their third game in as many days, as the top two seeds in the Class AAA tournament get to play Wednesday, the tournament's opening day. South was the No. 3 seed, and Logan was seeded fifth.

South's motor, in the form of freshman point guard Taryn McCutcheon, only revved faster when Logan began to sputter. McCutcheon, who had nine points and 13 assists in the title game, also finished with a game-high six steals.

"I didn't guard her, but I had to help on her and she was tough," Logan guard Shayna Gore said. "I've never seen anyone play that fast before."

Gore led the Wildcats with 12 points, while freshman center Monica Mitchell had 11 points and eight rebounds.

The championship run ended a two-year span in which the Patriots were altogether absent from the State Tournament after a string of five straight appearances, during which South won state titles in 2006 and 2008.

Logan, which reached the state tournament for the first time in the program's history, landed three players on the All-Tournament team. Gore, Mitchell and guard Hannah Tothe were named to the team, as were the Spring Valley sophomore duo of Sarah Kelly and Madison Morris, as well as Morgantown senior guard Leah Taylor.
