INSTITUTE, W.Va. - West Virginia State made its first appearance this week in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association NCAA Division 2 Softball Poll, appearing at No. 25.
It is the first the Yellow Jacket program has ever made a national poll. State (16-5) is the only West Virginia Conference team to receive votes in the rankings, which are topped by Indianapolis (30-2). Defending national champion Valdosta State (26-8) is ranked fourth this week.
The poll is voted on by panel of Division 2 coaches, with each of the nation's eight regions represented on the panel by two coaches.
In 2012, West Virginia State won its first NCAA Atlantic Regional game in school history by beating Indiana (Pa.). The Yellow Jackets were eliminated from tournament play afterward by suffering losses to Kutztown and then a rematch game against IUP.
Senior pitcher Kelsey Lorraine currently has the best record in the West Virginia Conference, with eight wins in 11 decisions. Lorraine is second in the conference with 73 strikeouts and a 1.47 ERA. Senior Sara Pelegreen is also among conference pitching leaders, with a 6-1 record and a 2.17 ERA.
Sophomore outfielder Sabrina Schouten leads the Yellow Jackets with a .425 batting average while junior utility player Mattie Best is hitting .379.
State plays a doubleheader at rival Charleston (12-13) at 6 p.m. Saturday.
