Prep baseball, softball: Thursday roundup
CHARLESTON, W.Va. - It was better late than never for Herbert Hoover's baseball team Thursday evening.
Trailing 3-2 entering the seventh inning, the Huskies (20-1) rallied for four runs to escape Boone County with a 6-3 win over Scott.
Hunter White and Tristan Fields each had a pair of RBI for Hoover, while Austin Thomas chipped in with a pair of hits.
For Scott (12-10), Forrest Spurlock had a pair of hits, including a two-run homer, while Devin Bare finished with two hits and an RBI.
Point Pleasant 6, Nitro 4 -- The Big Blacks (14-9) jumped to a 5-1 lead after two innings and held on for the road win.
Austen Toler picked up the complete game win for Point Pleasant, while Alex Somerville and Levi Russell each had three hits.
For Nitro (14-8), Andrew Stone went 2-for-3.
Parkersburg South 8, St. Albans 7 -- The Patriots (18-8) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the home win.
Braxton Johnson had three hits and three RBI for South, while Clay Walters had three hits.
For St. Albans (15-8), Josh Burks and Andrew Mathew had two RBI apiece.
Charleston Catholic 11, Buffalo 6 -- The Irish broke a 6-6 tie with five runs in the sixth inning en route to the road win.
Kiefer Hovorka had three hits, including two doubles for Catholic (14-8), while Rocco Wilcox and Nelson McKown had two hits apiece.
For Buffalo (6-10), Laythen Good and Nick Gunter each had two hits for the Bison, while Brad Harris had a double and two RBI.
Poca 14, Winfield 6 -- Matt Chandler highlighted a 19-hit attack with three hits, including a pair of homers and four RBI to lead the Dots (17-6) at home.
Brett Watts and Cam Cottrill had three hits apiece for Poca, with Watts collecting four RBI.
For Winfield (10-13), Jordan Clark homered and knocked in three runs, while Josh Bumgarner and Derek Whiteside had two hits apiece.
In Thursday's softball action:
St. Albans 8, Riverside 0 -- Senior pitcher Ali Haynes (20-4) picked up her 70th career win with a four-hit shutout at home. Haynes' 70 wins are the most for a Kanawha County Class AAA pitcher.
Madi Marshall had four hits, including a double, triple and two RBI for St. Albans (20-4), while Mariah Caudill had three hits and three RBI.
For Riverside, Felicia Burton had two hits.
Wayne 8, Cabell Midland 5 -- Kasey Endicott had a homer and three RBI to lead the Pioneers (21-5) at home.
Tasha Maynard also had a homer for Wayne, while Emily Thompson had a pair of doubles.
For Midland (24-5), Jenny Brumfield and Morgan Zerkle had two hits apiece.
Point Pleasant 9, Sissonville 5 -- Madison Barker struck out 10 and closed the game with three scoreless innings to lead the Big Blacks at home.
Megan Davis had a homer for Point Pleasant, while Makinley Higginbotham had three hits. Barker and Kaci Riffle had two RBI apiece for Point.
For Sissonville, Katelyn Linville had three hits, while Karli Pinkerton and Bekah Baldwin each knocked in a pair of runs.
