SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - West Virginia State University was eliminated from the NCAA Division II Softball Tournament on Sunday in its second game of the day at Shippensburg College.
The Yellow Jackets (42-14) fell 6-2 to Bloomsburg to end their season. Earlier in the day, the West Virginia Conference tournament champions defeated host Shippensburg 8-2.
Senior Desiree Giffin doubled and drove in three against Shippensburg (31-13) while Mattie Best and freshman designated hitter Sydney Kaplan each knocked in two. Sara Pelegreen scattered six hits in 6 2/3 innings to pick up the win, improving her season record to 14-3.
After a short break the Yellow Jackets returned to the field and after playing to a scoreless 4 1/2 innings, Bloomsburg scored three runs apiece in the fifth and sixth to go up 6-0 and chasing State freshman starting pitcher Anna Eggleston (9-3), who took the loss. Bloomsburg (42-15) pitcher Cait Paine (19-12) threw a complete game and held State to five hits.
Bloomsburg third baseman Erika Yanora was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Best was 2-for-3 for the Yellow Jackets in the loss.
Bloomsburg later fell to 4-0 to Kutztown in the Atlantic Region 2 championship game.
