VIENNA, W.Va. -- Buffalo is one step closer to its coveted three-peat.
The Bison opened the Class A State Tournament with a 1-0 win over Wheeling Central on Wednesday morning at Jackson Park. Buffalo will play a winner's bracket game this evening against Moorefield, which defeated Man, 3-2, after scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Buffalo pitcher Ali Burdette from Buffalo and her opposite number, Wheeling Central's Madison Basinger kept runners off base through much of the game, with just nine reaching base between the teams.
Burdette had seven strikeouts while Basinger fanned eight.
After five scoreless innings, Wheeling Central had three hits, but stranded each of them. Buffalo also had just three hits, but managed to move Paige England and Taylor Briscoe on an error by Wheeling Central third baseman Vanessa Saseen. That left Buffalo leadoff hitter Katie Higginbotham up to the plate.
Higginbotham singled to score England, who had taken second on the error and charged for third with help from a solid single by Briscoe.
Central put on the pressure on Burdette early. Joni Zavolta and Allie Cook singled to lead off the game and were soon put into scoring position. An infield fly, a Burdette strikeout and a groundout got the Bison out of the inning.
Buffalo's only other hit was produced by Burdette, who singled in the fourth. She was later caught in a double play.
