MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - If nothing else, West Virginia fans know who won't be their team's starting quarterback Saturday.
Coach Dana Holgorsen released a depth chart Sunday night and put juniors Clint Trickett and Paul Millard as the No. 1 quarterback. One of those two will start against William & Mary, meaning redshirt freshman Ford Childress is the third string.
Another omission highlights the opening day projection. Junior Andrew Buie, the leading rusher from last season, isn't listed at all. Charles Sims, a transfer from the University of Houston, is first, followed by freshman Wendell Smallwood, junior college transfer Dreamius Smith and junior Dustin Garrison, who led the team in rushing as a freshman in 2011.
In all, seven potential starters are players who didn't play in WVU's final game last season. On top of that, eight second-team named were not involved in the loss to Syracuse in the Pinstripe Bowl.
WVU sought to settle some position battles on offense after camp closed Aug. 17, and though quarterback was apparently not finished, there appears to be some idea of who will go where at other spots. Ivan McCartney, who quit the team last season and returned in the offseason, is a starting outside receiver. Freshman Daikiel Shorts, who had been an outside receiver before being moved in the final days of camp, is the starter at the one inside position the list mentions.
The Mountaineers frequently play with two inside receivers, and in the past have included both on a depth chart even if it meant giving it 12 positions. The coaches recently voiced disappointment with the players practicing at the position, which prompted the move for Shorts.
Redshirt freshman Tyler Orlosky and junior Mark Glowinski have held onto spots at center and right guard, respectively, but the third spot in need of a new starter remains undecided. Sophomore Marquis Lucas and senior Pat Eger are both listed as starters at left guard.
WVU lost four starters on defense and seems to have had those filled for some time. Sophomore Eric Kinsey was a first-team defensive end throughout game and appeared there again on the depth chart. Junior college transfer Brandon Golson is the starter at the Buck outside linebacker position. Juniors Travis Bell and Ishmael Banks are the starting cornerbacks, where WVU still has returning starter Brodrick Jenkins.
Sophomore Isaiah Bruce, the team's second-leading tackler last season, was moved from the Sam inside linebacker position to fill an opening at Spur linebacker outside, where he's backed up by 195-pound freshman Marvin Gross.
Gross and cornerback Daryl Worley are the only true freshmen listed on the defensive depth chart. The Mountaineers used eight true freshmen on that side of the ball last season.
