The names on the depth chart may have changed, but the regular season role is continuing for Cabell Midland High School's football program.
The top two leading rushers are gone from last year's Class AAA state runner-up team, but that didn't slow the Knights as they piled up 605 rushing yards en route to a 70-0 season-opening win at Riverside on Thursday night.
A capacity crowd looked on at Warrior Stadium as Cabell Midland won its 13th consecutive regular-season contest and its 18th in its last 19 regular season games. Midland's last regular season loss came on Oct. 14, 2011 to Capital.
The Knights' win also spoiled the head coaching debut of Riverside's Steven Freeman, who took over the Warriors program after Ralph Hensley's resignation following last season's 2-8 campaign. Midland is Freeman's alma mater, and the 26-year-old later coached football there as an assistant.
Midland started quickly with a nine-play touchdown drive on its first possession, capped by a 3-yard Kasey Thomas touchdown run. Thomas led all rushers with 156 yards on 12 carries, including touchdown runs of 3, 71, 11 and 1.
The Knights (1-0) led 36-0 at halftime, and things continued to go downhill quickly in the third quarter for the Warriors when Huntington High School transfer Donte Hendricks took the half's opening kickoff and zigzagged down the field for a 97-yard touchdown to make it 43-0.
The Warriors (0-1) allowed 661 yards of total offense to Cabell Midland, and the Knights held a 22-3 advantage on first downs. Riverside couldn't muster much offensively, either.
The inexperienced Warriors had minus-3 yards of total offense at intermission, and finished the game with 42 total yards and more interceptions (two) than completions (one).
Running back Will Jackson paced Riverside offensively with 57 yards on 19 carries.
