MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Curtis Jones, who was in his second year with West Virginia University as the Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Services, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning. He was 40.
"Curtis Jones was a close friend, a role model to our players and a true professional," WVU football Coach Dana Holgorsen said. "His loss will be felt by all of us in many ways."
Jones was hired by Athletic Director Oliver Luck last year after a lengthy process to replace the retired Garrett Ford.
He was in charge of the student services division of the athletic department and managed the academic support for the football team.
"It's a very, very integral part of what we do," Holgorsen said in July.
"It took a year to hire Curtis Jones and we finally got him in place and our team GPA - and I don't know the exact numbers - went from 2.3 to 2.8. Our cumulative team GPA last semester was 2.8. Tell me that personnel doesn't matter."
Prior to WVU, Jones was at the University of Texas for three years and coordinated the football academic support services program there as an assistant athletic director. He was also an assistant athletic director for student development at the University of South Florida from 2008-09 and spent six years at the University of Oklahoma as an assistant athletic director for compliance and later athletic academic affairs.
In 1999-2000, Jones was the director of football operations for the University of Missouri.
