WVU basketball: Huggins adds 2014 recruit

Jevon Carter, a point guard in the 2014 recruiting class at Proviso East High, in Chicago, committed to West Virginia last Tuesday night.

"I just feel like this is the best fit for me," Carter told the Charleston Daily Mail. "They blew me away with the visit."

The 6-foot-1, 165-pound Carter visited the Aug. 30 weekend and attended the football team's 24-17 victory against William & Mary, but also got a look at his future. Coach Bob Huggins has no seniors on his roster, meaning all of the players Carter met could be his teammates next fall.

"I really liked the way I bonded with the players so quickly and so easily," he said. "It felt like we already knew each other."

The roster also has but two point guards in juniors Juwan Staten and Gary Browne and two shooting guards in sophomores Eron Harris and Terry Henderson. The other seven players currently on scholarship are 6-7 or taller.

"I like playing with big guys," he said.

He's the only player committed to the upcoming recruiting class.

Carter, who listed his defense, dribbling and passing ahead of his scoring and shooting when he was talking of his strengths, said he hadn't been considering WVU until assistant coach Larry Harrison made contact in late July.

He quickly remembered their 2010 Final Four appearance and soon discovered a fondness for Huggins' motion offense that lets players operate freely, though within the boundaries of the system.

"The way that he lets the players just player their game is good for me," Carter said. "I don't need to go there and try to adapt to a system too much. I just have to play my way in the offense."

Carter led his high school team in scoring with 18 points per game last season as the Panthers finished fourth in the state. A year earlier, Proviso East was the runner-up. He played with SMU recruit Sterling Brown and Illinois State recruit Paris Lee.
