Prep soccer: Capital boys rebound from 3-goal deficit to top Irish
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Capital trailed by three goals at the half but stormed back in the final 40 minutes to pull out a 4-3 win over Charleston Catholic in boys high school soccer play Tuesday evening at Shoenbaum Stadium.
Tyler Shaffer led Capital with three goals and an assist. Keenan Barbezette scored the go ahead goal for the Cougars (5-8-0) with 18:37 to play.
Joey Trupo scored two goals and assisted a third for the Irish. Anthony Cipollone scored the Irish's third goal.
George Washington 2, Parkersburg 1 - The top-ranked Patriots improved to 14-0-0 with the win over the second-ranked Big Reds (12-1-2).
Drew Davis had both GW goals, with an assist from Logan O'Hara on the first.
For Parkersburg, Immanuel Opuka-Dua scored the lone goal.
Sissonville 10, Mingo Central 2 - Josh Rawson scored three goals to lead the Indians. Dougie Harding and Dillon Asbury added two goals apiece for Sissonville.
For Mingo Central, John Heft and Benjamin Moore had single goals.
Ravenswood 8, Herbert Hoover 5 - Dalton Gandee had four goals to lead the Red Devils at home.
Nate Schiefer added three goals for Ravenswood.
For Hoover (2-9-0), Thomas Canterbury had two goals, while Joel Thaxton and Stephen Watkins each had a goal and assist.
Hurricane 3, Nitro 1 - The Redskins improved to 7-5-1 with the win.
Loran Meadows, Conner Fowler and Guillermo Ugarte had goals for Hurricane, while Nathan Bailey scored the lone Nitro goal.
In girls soccer action:
Winfield 5, St Albans 0 - Josee Erlandson, Braiden Maddox, Mary Lawman, Mackenzie Pritt and Anita Shah scored a goal a piece as the Generals (15-0-0) won at St Albans. Lawman added two assists as well as an assist for both Paige Bannister and Baylee Womack for Winfield.
Megan Russell for St Albans had six saves for the Dragons.
Hurricane 4, Nitro 0 - Kayla McKnight and Kayli Blackburn both netted a goal a piece in the first half as the Redskins (12-1-1) won at Nitro. Audrey Barber and Lauren London scored the other two Hurricane goals in the second half.
Savannah Miller of Nitro had 11 saves for the Wildcats.
Sissonville 2, Capital 0 - Karli Pinkerton scored both goals for the Indians won at Capital. Madison Jones and Mary Schmeck both had an assist in each half on the Pinkerton goals.
Capital had seven saves in the loss to Sissonville.
Cross Lanes Christian 4, Poca 3 - The Warriors improved to 12-0-0 with the home win.
Abbigail Holbert and Kathryn Legg had two goals apiece for Cross Lanes, while Kaylee Witters had two assists.
For Poca (5-9-1), Harley Hutchins had two goals, while Maria Cook added a goal.
