POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. - The defending champions will be back to defend their title at next week's Class AAA girls soccer State Tournament in Beckley.
Winfield battled through a scoreless first half and found the back of the net three times in the second as the Generals beat Spring Valley 3-0 at Point Pleasant High School to win their fourth consecutive Class AAA Region 4 title.
Spring Valley (17-6) came out with a game plan to slow down the explosive Winfield offense, and for a half it worked. The Timberwolves defenders pushed the attacking players to the outside of the field and did not allow the Generals forwards much room to work in the middle of the field.
When the second half began, Winfield (21-1-1) put a quick end to any thoughts of a possible upset. Katie Bryant brought the ball down the right flank and played in back to the middle of the field where freshman Mary Lawman was waiting to pounce. Lawman's strike beat Spring Valley goalkeeper Hannah Smith to give Winfield the lead one minute into the half.
"We made sure we controlled the defense so they couldn't make the inside runs," Timberwolves Coach Todd Smith Said. "To come out that quick in the second half and get a goal, it kind of gets on you quick."
The other Lawman on Winfield's roster, Jayne, converted a penalty kick with 15 minutes to play to push the lead to 2-0 before Braiden Maddox hooked up with Jordan Pauley on a corner kick for the final score of the match to set the result at 3-0 in Winfield's favor.
"We went toe to toe with the reigning state champions and possibly the new state champions," Davis said. "They're a very good team. For our program to get where it is today we've made some great strides and we're very proud of the girls and what they've done."
Winfield Coach Marshall Hoff said he spoke to his team at halftime about the long list of teams that were good but were beaten short of the state tournament. He didn't want the Generals to join that club this season.
"We talked about that at halftime because at this time of year to will to win can pull a game off," he said. "There's been good teams going home many times."
The Generals will play Morgantown, which defeated Parkersburg South 1-0 in the Region 1 final, in the Class AAA state semifinals on Friday in Beckley. The Mohigans defeated Winfield on penalty kicks in the 2011 Class AAA state title game.
