CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The University of Hawaii's athletic director was hurt in a scuffle that broke out following a West Virginia University women's basketball victory over his school's team Sunday night.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported the incident in which the school official, Ben Jay, tried to intervene. WVU and Hawaii squared off on the court as part of the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic tournament.
After WVU won the tournament with a 59-56 victory over Hawaii and awards were being prepared, a fight reportedly broke out behind the West Virginia bench.
Michelle Yu, spokesperson for the Honolulu Police Department, confirmed the incident.
"It appears a UH fan was heckling the visiting team," she said. "After the game, a scuffle ensued. The UH athletic director, and maybe a visitor from West Virginia, had minor injuries. The UH fan was not identified."
Hawaii's athletic director, Jay, remained kneeling on the Stan Sheriff Center court for several minutes, the Star-Advertiser reported, after it appeared he tried to intervene.
Jay received treatment from EMTs on the court for his back. He walked off the court slowly under his own power after about 20 minutes, saying his back "spasmed up" on him.
