MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Dana Holgorsen's fourth season as West Virginia University's football coach will feature a fourth defensive coordinator.
The team announced Thursday, one day after WVU signed 21 players in its recruiting class, that defensive coordinator Keith Patterson "voluntarily left the football program and is no longer a member of the coaching staff."
Patterson was not at any of the team's signing day functions Wednesday.
Patterson is expected to be named the defensive coordinator at Arizona State.
"I want to thank Keith for his two years that he spent coaching in our program," Holgorsen said in a statement. "He was a valuable member of our staff, and we wish him nothing but the best."
A source told the Charleston Daily Mail on Thursday that safeties coach Tony Gibson is the leading candidate to be promoted to defensive coordinator.
Last month, Erik Slaughter's contract as the defensive line coach wasn't renewed. His spot on the staff was filled by former WVU linebacker and Miramar High coach Damon Cogdell, who has only been described by WVU as a defensive assistant.
