Patterson's new job reunites him with Sun Devils coach Todd Graham. The two have known one another for many years and worked together for five combined seasons when Graham was the head coach and Patterson was an assistant at Texas's Allen High (1995), as well as the University of Tulsa (2003-05) and University of Pittsburgh (2011).
On that same Pitt staff was Gibson. Patterson played a role in WVU hiring Gibson last season because of the way the two worked together with the Panthers in 2011. Holgorsen hired Patterson because of what he witnessed coaching against Patterson's Pitt defense.
The job also could go to someone from the outside, and Holgorsen will have to hire someone to fill the open spot on the staff.
Gibson has never been a coordinator at the Division I level. Special teams coordinator Joe DeForest and cornerbacks coach Brian Mitchell both have been, DeForest for the first time in 2012, when he was relieved of his duties before the end of the season, and Mitchell from 2010-12 at East Carolina.
Mitchell's contract at ECU was not renewed at the end of the 2012 season and he rejoined Holgorsen at WVU last year after they worked together at Texas Tech in 2006-07.
Holgorsen's first season with WVU was spent with Jeff Casteel as his defensive coordinator. Casteel and his defensive line and cornerbacks coach left the team after the season for Arizona. WVU's defensive numbers have slipped from being No. 33 overall, No. 60 in scoring and No. 35 against the pass in Casteel's final season to ranking Nos. 108, 114 and 118 with DeForest in 2012 and Nos. 101, 99 and 106 with Patterson last season.
WVU's improvement was slight last season and also stunted severely by injuries. The Mountaineers had 17 players miss at least one game to injury and nine players suffer season-ending injuries. In all, injuries cost regular players 93 games."If you go back and start really watching things, the first four, five, six games, we were rolling pretty good," Gibson said Wednesday. "We were really good on third down and holding people down and we were really playing well. Then the injuries started and every week it seemed like we'd lose one or two more."
