"For our Virginia guys, it's like our Florida guys when they go play in Florida," he said. "They know those kids. Anytime you can go and play on a national stage like that, your kids get excited to go play."
Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas, a Lynchburg, Va., native who played Sparrow when Thomas was at Brookville High School and Sparrow was at Liberty High, said he ran into Sparrow in the summer.
"It was good to see him, good to see a guy from the hometown have a lot of success," Thomas said.
"I wish him the best on every day except this Saturday."

SPARROW MIGHT not be available for Saturday's game. Holliday called him "doubtful" for the contest as he continues to recover from a sprained ankle suffered against Gardner-Webb. Sparrow did not dress for the Ohio game. Holliday added he wasn't sure about defensive end Jeremiah Taylor's availability yet. Taylor said he hurt his back against the Bobcats.
The Herd will be without another defensive lineman for good. Holliday said Ken Smith had decided to no longer play football.
