HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- The Marshall University football program has a schedule opening next season after its home game against Louisville was moved to 2016.
The Thundering Herd and Cardinals will play in Huntington on Sept. 24, 2016, MU announced Tuesday. The Charleston Daily Mail reported in July the change was likely as a result of Louisville's change in conference affiliation.
Louisville added a road game against Notre Dame to the 2014 schedule as a result of the school's switch to the Atlantic Coast Conference. That left the Cardinals with five home games and seven road games.
The schools' agreement to move the game will allow Louisville to schedule an additional home game next season. Marshall can add a Football Championship Subdivision opponent to fill the vacancy.
Marshall, which is 4-2 overall and 2-0 in Conference USA this season, has non-conference road games against Ohio's Miami University (Aug. 30, 2014) and Akron (Sept. 20, 2014) scheduled next season. The Herd will host Ohio on Sept. 13, 2014.The 2016 schedule now features home games against Akron and Louisville. The Herd has two non-conference openings to fill that season.
