WHEELING - Senior quarterback Trenton Gibbs scored ran a 2-point conversion in overtime on Saturday night at Wheeling Island Stadium to lift Wahama to a wild 43-42 victory over Madonna in the Class A state championship game, giving the White Falcons their first state title.
The Blue Dons scored first in OT on the last of five TDs by junior quarterback Ross Comis. After the extra point, Wahama scored a TD and called a time out. After an encroachment penalty on Madonna moved the ball 1 and a half yards closer, Gibbs found an opening on the left side and slipped into the end zone, setting off a celebration.
Wahama running back Kane Roush, who was his team's player of the game, ran for 179 yards and three TDs on 23 carries and added five receptions for 78 yards.
Comis, the Blue Dons player of the game, had 152 yards rushing and five scores on 27 carries. He also completed eight of his nine pass attempts for 131 yards and another TD.
This was Madonna's first trip to the title game since winning the 2009 crown under coach Bob Kramer. The Blue Dons also finished as runners up in 2008.
The game marked the first time since 2002 that the Class A championship went into OT. That year, Wheeling Central defeated Moorefield 14-7.
