Girls basketball: Ward, Patriots have a banner night

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- George Washington point guard Alanna Mobayed almost collected a triple-double with seven points, 12 assists and nine rebounds.

While the sophomore put up an impressive stat line, it may have just been the third best on her own team.

It was that type of night for the Patriots.

Senior Rachel Ward poured in a career-high 40 points while Junior Kelli Jo Harrison added 27 points to go along with 15 rebounds to lead George Washington (2-1) to an 88-61 home victory over Nitro (3-3) on Tuesday night.

"I know what this team is capable of when they are on, and I thought tonight they showed what they are capable of," GW Coach Jamie LaMaster said. "I have been waiting for this type of production."

With her 40 points, which included a 14-for-26 shooting night and almost 50 percent from 3-point range (7-15), Ward became the first player under LaMaster to reach the 40-point mark.

"This is my ninth year here (GW) and my 20th year overall as a middle school and high school coach, I can't recall a player for me scoring 40 points," LaMaster said. "That was great for Rachel. She is very deserving."

LaMaster has coached his fair share of good players, guiding the Patriots to the semifinals of the State Tournament the past two years, and three years overall since taking over the program in 2004.

"It means a lot," Ward said. "It's a goal. It's not something I'm trying to do, it just happens. It felt great out there. Everything was falling. It boosts confidence, and helps others have confidence in me."

Ward was the leading returning scorer off last year's team at 12.8 points per game, and with her huge night against the Wildcats, is averaging 23.1.

"Rachel had that breakout game," LaMaster said. "She has been big all four years. From her freshman year, she has played hard, been physical, all over the place, plays defense, and shoots the three ball. That's the Rachel I know."

Harrison also had a big night. Her 27 points came off a 9-of-12 shooting night, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range. She pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds and added four blocks.

"Kelli Jo has been offered by several schools," LaMaster said. "She is one of the most versatile players I've had. She's inside and outside, rebounds, scores, and is a constant double-double. There are so many things I can do with Kelli. I would be hurting without her."

"I want to get a college scholarship," said Harrison, who has been offered a full scholarship to Division II Fairmont State. "It's huge for me. I just want to do everything I can for my team and get to the state championship game."

Kelli Douglas led Nitro with 15 points, followed by Savannah Shamblin, Melissa Belcher and Halie Miller with 12 points each.
