Girls basketball: Capital hits the boards, tops Riverside
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- One might assume that Riverside dominated the paint against Capital on Thursday night after Warriors standout Brittany Wood compiled her third triple-double of the season.
While Wood had 24 points, 13 rebounds and 10 blocked shots, it was the Capital post players that beat the Warriors at their own game.
The Cougars, led by a big performance from sophomore Dashia Foster, outrebounded Riverside by 25 en route to a 64-51 home victory at Capital.
Foster scored 12 points and grabbed 20 boards in guiding the Cougars (6-6) to a 58-33 rebounding advantage over the Warriors (3-10), normally Riverside's main strength with the 6-foot Wood.
"To be honest, the one thing we have done consistency all year long is rebound the basketball," Capital Coach B.J. Calabrese said. "Every single game I look at the stat sheet, I'm amazed by the rebounds we are grabbing."
Calabrese said that the addition of Foster, a transfer from Class A defending state champion St. Joseph, has provided a boost.
"Dashia has really helped us out tremendously," Calabrese said. "She has really worked hard and is showing great improvement. We push her day after day. She can finish inside. That's a key for us."
The players have responded to Foster joining the team, as well, and giving Capital an added weapon inside.
"She has been a great factor to the team this year," Capital forward Katie Crowder said.
"At first, everyone was unsure with a new girl coming. In our second game, she came out really strong. Ever since, she has been on the glass for us with rebounds and put-backs."
Crowder - despite being undersized at 5-5 - was the main post player for the Cougars last year. Her size hasn't affected her, though, as she continues to give Capital great rebounding inside, including nine against Riverside Thursday.
"Katie is incredible," Calabrese said. "You know she is going to play hard every single game. She is undersized and doesn't necessarily jump the best but she still is a great rebounder, dives on the floor, and is probably our best inside passer, too. She's so consistent."
Crowder is proud of her accomplishments in the post at such a small stature, but is very glad to have Foster on the team, giving Capital more size and rebounding.
"I have gotten used to getting on the inside and banging bodies with the big girls," Crowder said. "It's what I'm known for being on the inside. It's a good feeling to know even though you are small, you can get in there and get rebounds. I have played in the blocks since I was in first grade.
"It's a good feeling, though, to have Dashia. It's a stress reliever. I have moved to the guard position a little more because I had a huge weight on my shoulders last year. It was nerve wracking because everyone was so much taller than me. It takes a lot of pressure off."
Riverside Coach Scott Garretson was very impressed with the rebounding of the Cougars, especially against what is usually the main strength of his team.
"That was the difference in the game," Garretson said. "We really cut down our turnovers, which was what we needed to do. (Point guard) Kara Knapp did a great job but little did we know rebounding would come back to hurt us. It wasn't second-chance points, it was third and fourth."
The Capital post players offset another huge game from Wood in recording another triple-double for the Warriors.
"She is a tremendous player," Calabrese said of Wood. "She finishes so well. A lot of times, you think you have her defended, and then she is still scoring off of you. She is a very good player."
Sheree Clayborn contributed 12 points for Riverside. Keke Walker led Capital with 17 points and Khadijah Lee added 16 points, eight rebounds and six steals.
