Boys basketball: Beckley defeats George Washington

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The matchup between George Washington and Beckley on Wednesday night featured two ranked teams and two of the top scorers in the state as well.

GW's Luke Eddy had 23 points and Beckley's Donte Nabors scored 24 points as the duo held up their end in their individual meeting between the two teams.

Team wise, though, was a different story.

No. 10 Beckley led No. 8 GW from start to finish and dismantled the host Patriots 74-51 in impressive fashion in front of a crowd of about 400.

"I couldn't begin to tell you the last time we got beat by 20 in a game," GW Coach Rick Greene said. "I thought we could be more competitive. (Beckley) were just really good defensively and took us out of everything. Then it steamrolled after that."

Beckley Coach Ron Kidd wasn't sure if his team would be ready for the matchup, but was pleasantly surprised.

"I was real impressed with our kids," Kidd said. "I didn't have a feel like they were ready at first. They proved me wrong. Kids are funny. You never really know. Our coaches got them ready to play and they did what they told them to do."

The Flying Eagles (10-4) jumped on the Patriots (11-4) right from the opening tip, outscoring GW 22-10 in the first quarter behind nine points from Nabors.

Things didn't get any better for GW in the second quarter as Beckley continued its torrid play in the first half in leading 42-20 at halftime. The closest the Patriots got the rest of the game was 15 late in the third quarter.

"We have so much respect for GW, their coaching staff and kids," Kidd said. "Anytime you can beat people that you have respect for, it's a good feeling. We aren't satisfied. We feel like we can get better."

Both individual standouts turned in solid games, but the matchup was overshadowed by the blowout victory by the Flying Blacks, who have won six in a row.

Eddy, who came into the game leading the Mountain State Athletic Conference at 27.4 points per game, shot 8-for-16 from the field, but was harassed by the Beckley defense all night. The Patriots forced 12 turnovers in the first half.

"Luke's a player," Kidd said. "He got his points but we made him earn it. He can go home and feel like he went through a battle. We feel pretty good about Chase (Hancock) denying the other team's best player. I thought he did an extremely good job on Luke."

Meanwhile, Nabors entered the contest at 20.4 points per game, and produced another solid game for the Flying Eagles. The junior scored a game-high 24 points, added six rebounds, five assists and five steals.

The difference between the two was Nabors got plenty of help, unlike Eddy, who is averaging nearly 46 percent of GW's scoring this year.

Beckley got solid games from freshman Nequan Carrington, who poured in 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked five shots. Also, Nicholas Deems added eight points and nine rebounds. As a team, the Flying Eagles was 30-for-59 from the floor.

"You know (Nequan) is only a ninth-grader," Kidd said with a grin on his face. "He's been real big. He is still wet behind the ears but he is getting better and better each game. The kids stepped up tonight."

Nabors added: "He was pretty big. He's a strong freshman. I don't think anybody in the state can stop him. He has a lot of to work to do but he will improve. He did great tonight. I got to give him his props."
