CHARLESTON, W.Va. - St. Marys freshman Ashley Hall sank four consecutive free throws in the final 30 seconds Friday, lifting the No. 3 seed Blue Devils (25-1) to a 45-43 win over second-seeded Wheeling Central (22-5) in the semifinals of the Class A state tournament.
Hall, who finished with eight points, stepped up in the absence of Blue Devil all-stater Audra Clark and starter Dani Moore, both of whom fouled out in the fourth quarter. Clark finished with a team-high 15 points and eight rebounds, while center Kendra Walker had 14 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
Central actually led 31-29 when Clark fouled out, but managed only two field goals in the final 5:30 of the game.
The Maroon Knights were led by Emily Bucon's 19 points and 14 rebounds. Colleen McCormick added 14 points and 13 boards for Central, which outrebounded the taller Blue Devils 39-35.
St. Marys advances to the Class A state championship game, scheduled for noon Saturday. The Blue Devils will play the winner of the second semifinal Friday between top-seeded St. Joseph and No. 4 seed Tucker County.
