Prep roundup: Burks, St. Albans rally for extra-innings victory
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The St. Albans baseball team looked to be in good position for a victory in Myrtle Beach, S.C., leading 3-0 in the third inning before the offense went cold, not scoring for the next six innings.
The Red Dragons (5-3) gave up the lead, but in extra innings, Red Dragons found their offense to earn a wild 7-6 victory over Watertown (N.Y.) at the Mingo Bay Classic on Wednesday.
With the game tied at 3 in the ninth inning, the Red Dragons scored four runs on a two-run single from Josh Burks and run-scoring singles by Joey Dodrill and Clark Bryant and held on after Watertown (1-1) scored three runs.
In other baseball action:
Conway S.C. 14, South Charleston 1 - The Black Eagles' offensive woes continued in a five-inning loss at the Mingo Bay Classic.
South Charleston managed just three hits, two of which came of the bat of senior catcher Jon Cline. Jonathan Pauley had a double and RBI for SC.
Powhaten, Va. 10, Hurricane 0 - The Redskins only managed five hits in getting shutout at the Mingo Bay Classic.
Austin Hensley had two hits for Hurricane (8-2).
For Powhaten, Zach Bartlett drove in three runs.
Cazenovia N.Y. 2, Charleston Catholic 0 - Mark Dewan had two hits, including a pair of RBI to lead the Lakers (1-1) to the Mingo Bay Classic win.
Connor Golden, Nelson McKown and Thad Jameson had two hits each for Catholic (6-2).
Herbert Hoover 18, Wayne 2 - The Huskies continued their torrid offensive pace, remaining unbeaten with the road win.
Hoover (9-0) pounded out 15 hits, led by Corey Bird and Tristan Fields with three hits each, followed by Cody Bowen and Austin Thomas with two apiece.
Independence 9, Poca 1 - The Patriots (4-1) plated five runs in the first inning and held on for the easy road win.
Wyatt Adkins, Andruw Hughart and Brian Sexton each had two hits and two RBI for Independence.
For Poca (6-3), Jake Payne had two hits, including a double.
Independence 5, Poca 1 - The Patriots completed the double-hitter sweep with the help of four Dots errors.
Brad Huffman had two hits and two RBI for the Patriots (5-1).
Jake Payne and Brett Watts had two hits apiece for Poca (6-4).
Nitro 5, Sissonville 3 - Soloman Shamblin smacked a three-run homer and Dillon Slack added a two-run shot to lead the Wildcats (5-2) at home.
Evan Eich had two hits, including a double for Nitro.
For Sissonville, Houston Hill was 2-for-3.
In softball action:
St. Albans 1, Huntington 0 - Mariah Caudill's infield single plated Ali Haynes for the game's only run as the Red Dragons (10-0) won at home.
Haynes (10-0) picked up the complete-game win for St. Albans, allowing just two hits with nine strikeouts.
