Prep baseball roundup: Bird strikes out nine, Huskies blank Tigers
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Corey Bird scattered five hits over seven innings in pitching Herbert Hoover to a 3-0 win over visiting Chapmanville in high school baseball action Wednesday.
Bird (4-0) struck out nine for the Huskies (22-2), while Tristan Fields had two hits and Austin Thomas knocked in a pair of runs.
For Chapmanville (19-7), William Copley had two singles.
Buffalo 4, Fayetteville 3 - Laythen Good's three-run double with two outs in the fourth inning erased a 2-1 deficit and propelled the Bison to the home win.
Sophomore right-hander Beau Whittington (5-0) stuck out six over six innings to pick up the win.
Aaron Lewis pitched a scoreless seventh inning to notch the save.
For Fayetteville (15-13), James Criss led the way with three hits, while Trey Phares added a pair of singles.
Poca 4-19, Mingo Central 0-0 - The Dots (23-7) swept a doubleheader from the Miners behind some strong pitching and timely hitting.
Ryan Leighton improved to 4-0 by tossing six shutout innings in the opener. Lucas Marshall followed with a five-inning shutout performance in the nightcap.
Matt Chandler threw one scoreless inning in the first game and drove in five runs on the day to pace Poca.
Nitro 12, Winfield 8 - The Wildcats jumped to a 12-3 lead after four innings and held on for the home win.
Jacob Williams had three hits for the Wildcats (18-10), while Matt Harrison, Caleb Fridley and Evan Eich had two hits apiece.
For Winfield (11-16), Jordan Clark smacked a two-run homer, while Josh Bumgarner had two hits, including a double.
Charleston Catholic 15, Williamstown 1 - The Irish pounded out 15 hits in cruising on the road.
Rocco Wilcox, Kiefer Hovorka and Sam McKown had three hits apiece for Catholic (19-8), with McKown smacking a homer and knocking in three runs. Wilcox also had three RBI.
For Williamstown (19-10), Avery Goff had a pair of singles.
