Region 1 - How scary is it that Fairmont Senior is in Class AA? That's what I thought. Can anybody not pick the Polar Bears in Region 1? I must, and I will.
Region 2 - I've been told that Bridgeport is overrated. That might be true, but the fact is, these Indians faced better pitching in 2012 as a Class AAA team and won't see the same velocity or offspeed efficiency in the postseason this season. Petersburg might be the best team in this region, which should make for an interesting regional championship game. Coach Robert Shields should be able to bring his Indians back to Charleston.
Region 3 - Defending Class AA champion Wyoming East has lost only three times since April began. Two of those losses came to PikeView, which happens to be on the opposite side of the region. They'll probably meet for the regional title, although getting past Liberty won't be a cakewalk for anybody. Welcome back to Charleston, Wyoming East.
Region 4 - Herbert Hoover will be trying to defend its regional title, but this time a much-improved Poca team stands in its way. The Huskies will throw Tristan Fields and the Dots will send out Jake Payne in this regional semifinal. With all due respect to sections 3 and 4, the winner of that game will represent Region 4 in the State Tournament. Experience says go with Hoover.
Region 1 - Is it that simple to pick Wheeling Central every year? Not any more, even though Madonna has gone through the season without Coach Jeff Baire and Magnolia has made the move to Class A. Sections 3 and 4 won't have a say in who reaches the State Tournament. The winner of Madonna and Magnolia are headed to Power Park. Welcome back, Dave Cisar and the Blue Eagles.
Region 2 - Two of Moorefield's losses have come to Jefferson, and a third was to fellow Region 2 member Notre Dame. This is a three-team race between Notre Dame, Moorefield and East Hardy. Coach Ray Snapp will bring East Hardy back to Power Park.
Region 3 - Greenbrier West can hit the ball, but so can Valley, and the Greyhounds have pitching to go with it featuring four-year starter Arik McGinnis. Valley Coach Joe Craffey said this is the deepest pitching staff he has had. That should be plenty for a regional title.
Region 4 - Can anybody beat Charleston Catholic? The Irish is on a mission, and, has won nine of its last 10 games. The only loss came to GW.
