Then came the lightning, and a delay of nearly three hours. Play finally resumed at 9:50 p.m., and Rogers was issued her third unintentional-intentional walk of the evening. Reynolds followed with a solid single into left field that scored the only run Hurricane needed.
Once she had a lead, Rogers began throwing harder. Marshall, the Dragons' No. 2 hitter, led off the sixth with an infield single but Mariah Caudill and Alyssa Bonham swung at third strikes they simply couldn't catch up to, and Marshall was stranded when Haili McCown hit a soft liner directly to Sargent at short.
St. Albans outhit Hurricane 6-5, but never had a runner advance past second.
"Every time we got a runner in scoring position we just couldn't get the other hit," SA Coach Greg Garber said. "They made a couple nice plays. They made the plays they needed to."
Rogers finished with four strikeouts, and for the most part neutralized the top third of the St. Albans lineup. Haynes, Caudill and Marshall - St. Albans' three leading hitters on the season - were a combined 2-for-9.
Freshmen Maddie Hebb of Hurricane and SA's Holstein were each 2-for-3.
