It paid off in the 53rd minute when sophomore M.E. Zulauf struck a corner kick that found the head of freshman Mary Lawman. The ball beat an outstretched Thompson to put Winfield ahead 2-1.
Zulauf, daughter of former Marshall soccer player Andy Zulauf who was enshrined in the MU athletics Hall of Fame in 1994, collected her second assist of the game in the 69th minute when she whipped a pass from the left side across the field to Bryant who put away her second goal and effectively ended any chance of a Hurricane comeback.
"M.E. has a God-given gift for speed and touch to go with it," Hoff said. "That kid's got so much to offer. She comes from a strong background of (soccer) and just keeps moving forward."
Hurricane actually outshot Winfield 11 to 10 and also had more shots on target (9) than the Generals (6). The Redskins did their best to test Maddox after she allowed the early goal to Watson, but the senior goalkeeper and captain was able to keep them off the scoreboard the rest of the game and put her team in a position to come back from the early deficit. Hoff said both teams being good helps but all these two teams need to get up for this game is to know who the opposition is.
"This is always a rival game so it's going to be a great game no matter where everybody is at," he said. "No matter if one of us is 50th in the state, and the other one is first, it's always a battle and that's a good thing."
Young said playing Winfield brings the best out in her team and that she does not expect this to be the last time her Redskins see the Generals in 2013.
"We'll probably play them at the MSAC championship unless something dire happens with one of the two teams," she said. "We'll play them again for a sectional championship so this is probably the first of what probably is going to be a three-game series. I like it because both teams really step up and play well when we're against each other."
Hurricane will look to bounce back from its first loss of the season Thursday at St. Albans. Winfield also returns to action Thursday and will attempt to keep its unbeaten, untied record in tact at Nitro.
