MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Men's golf is returning as a varsity sport at West Virginia University.
Athletics director Oliver Luck announced Monday that men's golf will be reintroduced as a varsity sport for the 2015-2016 season.
When competition resumes, it will be the first time in 33 years that men's golf is a varsity sport at WVU. It was a varsity sport from 1933 to 1982.
The Big 12 Conference requires members to have a minimum of six men's and six women's sports. With the return of men's golf, WVU will have six men's sports and 10 women's sports sponsored by the Big 12.
Luck says in a news release that a full-time men's golf coach will be hired by March 31, 2014.
