He led the Cougars with 122 yards rushing on three carries, but it was Pratt's growth that might have shown the most. He was 6 of 8 throwing the ball for 115 yards and two touchdowns, but he also showcased his running ability more than in his freshman season of 2012.
He started the scoring with a 12-yard run off a fake handoff with 9:32 left in the opening quarter, and later executed an option that faked out nearly the entire Warrior defense and appeared to give Pratt a 68-yard touchdown run.
A holding penalty cut that gain to 15 yards, however. Capital was flagged 12 times for 101 yards.
"It feels real good to get out there. The game's slowed down for me this year," Pratt said. "It's feeling good this year."
Pratt said the 52-yard scoring strike to Nazario was part improvisation and part luck.
"I backed up, and [the receivers] kind of ran the wrong routes a little bit," he said. "I tried to scramble but didn't see anything and backed up and saw him just standing there, so I just threw it."
Carpenter said there were elements of Pratt's performance that showed obvious growth.
"Most of the time last year he would just have handed the ball off," Carpenter said of his quarterback's tendency to keep the ball and break for the open field Friday night. "That's different. But I think as he does that, he's becoming a leader, too."
Riverside was held to 50 total yards in the first half, when the Warriors also lost three fumbles. They reached the end zone for the first time this season with 7:01 remaining in the game when quarterback Cole Sigmon fought his way to a score from 12 yards out.
"Right now, for us, it's the little things we have to celebrate," first-year Riverside coach Steven Freeman said. "I thought we actually played better than we did a week ago. There was some improvement."Riverside senior running back Will Jackson, who led the team with 53 rushing yards in a 70-0 loss to Cabell Midland last week, sprained his left ankle in the first half and sat out the rest of the game. Jacob Mullins led the Warriors with 69 rushing yards on 16 carries.
