Endorsement: For County Commissions, newby Metz in Kanawha and veteran Andes in Putnam

Things are going pretty well at the Kanawha County Commission. The three commissioners, Kent Carper, Dave Hardy and Hoppy Shores, work well together, as they have since 2001, almost to the point of finishing each other’s sentences.

That said, it wouldn’t hurt to shake that relationship up a bit and bring in a new person.

That new person could be George Anthony Metz of Elkview, who is running opposite six-term incumbent Hoppy Shores in the Republican primary race for County Commission. The winner of the primary will face Clint Casto, the lone Democrat in the primary.

Metz is a fresh face to Kanawha County leadership with many good ideas. A native of the Beckley area, he earned degrees from WVU-Institute of Technology, the West Virginia State Police Academy and the WVU College of Law. He has experience in retail, law enforcement and as an attorney.

He wants to push the County Commission to be more visible, possibly conducting meetings around the county, improve the county website, look to eliminate redundancy, and for the commission to do a better job of promoting Kanawha County.

Not all of his ideas will work, but he’s got the enthusiasm and outlook of a new person focused on improvement.

Still, Kanawha Countians are grateful for the long-time service of Commissioner Shores. A life-long Charlestonian, star athlete, U.S. Army veteran, insurance agent, former legislator and engineer of Hoppy’s Express children’s train, the grandfatherly Shores is as loveable a gentleman as you are likely to ever meet.

But after four consecutive six-year terms as commissioner beginning in 1990 (and from 1966 to 1972), it’s time for voters to pass the gavel to the new guy with new ideas.

In Putnam County, Stephen Andes is running for his third term, facing challenger and general contractor Jerry Dials on the Republican ticket. There is no Democratic candidate. Andes is running on his record, which is one of good, solid, no-nonsense leadership.

For County Commission, the Daily Mail recommends George Anthony Metz in Kanawha County and Stephen Andes in Putnam County.
