Prep roundup: Capital through to bracket title game at Mingo Bay
Anthony Gavin had two hits, including a double and his third homer of the season, and a pair of RBI to lead Capital to a 9-0 win over Spring Mills in the Mingo Bay Classic baseball tournament in Myrtle Beach on Thursday.
Caleb Kinder added three hits, including a double and two RBI for the Cougars (6-11), while Austin Hupp contributed three hits. Jordan Bray had two hits for Capital, which will face Washington (W.Va.) in the Bracket 2 championship game today at 10 a.m. The Cougars are 3-1 in the tournament. Sring Mills dropped to 3-11.
St. Albans 14-6, Liberty (Raleigh) 4-5 — Andrew Matthews and Joseph Call combined for 14 strikeouts as the Red Dragons (8-6) swept a doubleheader at home against Liberty (Raleigh).
Bobby Grishaber, Josh Burks, Andrew Matthews, Brandon Johnson and Hunter Chandler had two RBI each for the Red Dragons in the first game.
In game two, Grishaber and Burks each had two hits for SA.
In softball Thursday:
Riverside 8, Clay County 0 — Catie McCormick and Harley Justice combined to toss a three-hit shutout as the Warriors (7-8) notched the home win.
McCormick also had two hits and two RBI at the plate, while Kendal Marshall, Felicia Burton added two hits apiece.
Buffalo 8, Man 2 — Ali Burdette smacked a homer, a pair of doubles and drove in three runs to lead the Bison (6-5) to the win at the Best of the Best tournament.
Noel Dingess added two hits for the Bison, while Chelsey Parkins picked up the complete game win in allowing three hits and striking out 11. For Man, Hunter Harvey had a pair of singles.
Roane County 3, South Harrison 1 – Casey Lassiter pitched a complete game, two-hitter with 14 strikeouts to lead the Raiders at home.
Miranda Hall paced Roane (12-4) at the plate with a double and homer, while Kasey Blosser and Haley Gibson added two hits apiece. South Harrison dropped to 8-2.
Wayne 3, Lincoln County 2 — Olivia Followay, Tara Watts and Emily Thompson each had an RBI as the Pioneers (11-5) won at home.
Wayne’s Jessie Rowe allowed just one earned run in getting the win. Lincoln County pitcher Brooke West helped her cause with a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning. The Panthers dropped to 12-5.
