Marshall football: James Madison QB to transfer to MU

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Michael Birdsong, who quarterbacked James Madison University as a sophomore last season, announced on his Twitter feed that he will transfer to Marshall. Birdsong must sit the 2014 season due to NCAA transfer rules, then will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Last season, Birdsong threw for 2,728 yards, 22 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He made an official visit to Marshall this past weekend for the Green-White spring game. Rakeem Cato — the 2012 Conference USA MVP and 2013 C-USA offensive player of the year — enters his final season in 2014. There are three other quarterbacks on the roster — redshirt sophomore Gunnar Holcombe, redshirt freshman Kevin Anderson and freshman Cole Garvin. Marshall also has a verbal commitment from Class of 2015 quarterback Chase Litton from Tampa, Fla.
