PREP ROUNDUP: Nitro’s Barton tosses no-hitter against South

Nitro pitcher Tyler Barton was one walk away from a perfect game Tuesday night, leading the Wildcats to a 6-0 home win over Parkersburg South.

Barton, who pushed his season record to 5-0 with the win, faced the minimum 27 batters in a no-hitter against the Patriots. After he walked third baseman Josh Hall, the Wildcats were able to turn a double play. The senior struck out eight Parkersburg South batters and now has 38 strikeouts in 33 innings. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Eddie Flores drove in two runs for Nitro, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, while Ryan McDonough also went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Cabell Midland 4, Parkersburg 3 – Seth Kinker had a double and two RBI to help lead the Knights to the win in the MSAC third place game at Hurricane.

Cody Ballengee also had an RBI for Midland (13-10), while Cole Tilley added a pair of hits.

For Parkersburg (10-12), Logan Dudley had two hits and an RBI, followed by Max Chefren with two RBI.

St. Albans 10-12, Spring Valley 0-2 – The Red Dragons used a pair of solid pitching performance to earn a doubleheader sweep at home.

Andrew Mathews tossed a one hitter to earn the win in the first game, while Bobby Grishaber allowed five hits and just two runs to earn the game two win.

Mathews and Joseph Call had two RBI apiece for the Red Dragons in game one.

The Red Dragons (14-13) played long ball in the nightcap as Hunter Chandler and Adam Bowen each had a double, a homer and three RBI. Josh Burks also had knocked in three runs for SA.

Scott 10, South Charleston 6 -- At South Charleston, Cody Harvey pitched five innings for the Scott (8-18) striking out two in the win on the road. Andrew Prince had a perfect day going 3 for 3 with two RBI for Scott. Brandon Lafauci added a 3 for 4 performance with an RBI for the Skyhawks.

South Charleston (11-11) struggled with their pitching using six pitchers in seven innings but never found an answer for the Skyhawks bats. Antonio Brown went 1 for 3 with two RBI in the loss.

Herbert Hoover 13, Braxton County 1 -- At Herbert Hoover, the Huskies (21-3) needed just five innings to score 13 runs. Luke Bowman pitched all five innings giving up one run on six hits. Derek Dodd went 2 for 2 with three RBI for Hoover. Matt Justice added a 3 for 3 performance with two RBI. Hunter White got in on the action as well adding a double and a triple.

Ben Fincham was the lone bright spot for Braxton County (10-9) going 2 for 3 with a double.

Charleston Catholic 17, Fayetteville 5 – The Irish (18-7) pounded out 15 hits in the easy home win.

Thad Jameson and Jordan Covelli had three hits apiece to lead Catholic, while Sam McKown, Nick Russo and David Hamilton each added two hits. McKown added four RBI, while Covelli knocked in three runs.

For Fayetteville (15-16), Jake Alton collected two hits and three RBI.

Herbert Hoover 13, Braxton County 1 – The Huskies (21-3) plated six runs in the first inning and seven runs in the fourth to earn the five inning win.

Matt Justice led Hoover with three hits, while Hunter White, Shaun Dotson and Derek Dodd added two hits apiece. Dodd and Dotson both knocked in three runs, while Justice and Cody Bowen had two RBI each.

Braxton County dropped to 10-9.

In softball sectional play:

Roane County 3, Ravenswood 1 - At Ravenswood, Roane County scored three runs in the top of the sixth and held off Ravenswood. Casey Lassiter pitched seven innings giving up one run on three hits. Hailey Sloan had two RBI in the win.

Claudia Cubides went 1 for 3 with an RBI in the loss for Ravenswood. Sidnee Morgan added a 2-for-3 performance with a double.

Point Pleasant 1, Winfield 0 – Rebekah Darst’s sacrifice fly in the sixth inning plated the game’s only run as the Big Blacks earned the Class AAA Region 4, Section 1.

Karissa Cochran picked up the win for Point with the six hit shutout, while Winfield’s Cartney Schoolcraft took loss, despite allowing just three singles.

Ally Funk had two hits for Winfield (9-17).

Point holds a 1-0 lead in the best of three series, with game two scheduled for 6 p.m. today at Winfield. Game three will follow, if necessary.

South Charleston 11, George Washington 3 – The Black Eagles (15-13) earned the Class AAA Region 3, Section 3 title with the easy home win.

Aaliyah Phillips had three RBI for SC, while Kaylee Stanley added two hits and an RBI. Olivia Orcutt-Lazo added a double for the Black Eagles.

Billie Murray and Jessi Thevenin had two hits apiece for GW.
