PREP ROUNDUP: Herbert Hoover softball sweeps Nicholas County
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Herbert Hoover claimed the Class AA Region 4, Section 1 title Wednesday by sweeping Nicholas County, 16-0 and 9-1.
Alison Rager and Dellani Fix split time pitching in both games giving up just one run in 12 innnings. Rager also added a 4 for 5 performance in the first game of the double header with a home run and three RBI.
Shelby Groves was one of two bright spots in the first game for Nicholas County (15-13) turning in a 1 for 3 performance. Lindsey Butcher pulled in a 1 for 2 performance in the loss.
The second game continued the Husky dominance. McKensie Edmunds went 2 for 3 with two RBI. Ashleigh Tignor turned in a perfect performance going 4 for 4 for the game with three RBI.
Zoey Carte was hit by a pitch three times in the second game and leads the team being hit by a pitch ten times this season.
Katlyn Hanshaw pitched six innings for the Grizzlies giving up nine runs. Kinley Coleman went 1 for 3 for the game.
Logan 4-9, Nitro 3-0 — Hana Sedlock held Nitro to three hits on her way to throwing a shutout in the second game of a double-header sweep for Logan. Nitro stayed close in the first game, scoring the three in the sixth inning to draw within one, but could not overcome Nitro’s lead. The second game was all Logan, due largely to Sedlock’s performance on the mound, and consistent hitting throughout the game. Logan was lead at the plate by Hana Kolovich, who went a combined three-for-seven with a home run and an RBI on the day.
Buffalo 8, Charleston Catholic 0 — Bison pitcher Ali Burdette struck out ten and allowed only two hits on the way to pitching a five-inning shutout of the Irish. Burdette went two-for-three at the plate, with a double and an RBI. Buffalo catcher Chase Christy also went two-for-three, adding an RBI.
South Charleston 5, Winfield 2 — Despite a seventh inning rally, the host Black Eagles were able to hold on for the win, capitalizing on six errors from the Generals. South Charleston’s Jared Hill struck out five batters, while Antonio Brown went two-for-four with an RBI from the plate.
For Winfield, John Bellomy drove in a run.
Riverside 12, James Monroe 2 — At Riverside, Cameron Norris pitched six innings giving up two runs in the win. Chaz Davis went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBI for Riverside (13-10). Sam Stone added a 2 for 3 performance with a double and an RBI.
Steven McNeer went 2 for 3 for James Monroe.
Sissonville 11, Wirt County 0 — Senior Justin Elliott homered and Sissonville earned a five-inning, mercy-rule victory over visiting Wirt County (3-20).
Josh Landis went 3 for 3 and Austin Casto and Dominic Walker each were 2 for 2 for the Indians (17-12).
Hurricane 9, Spring Valley 4 — Hurricane’s J.T. Rogoszewski went four-for-four with five RBI to lead the Redskins over the visiting Timberwolves. Brandon Pauley added a home run, driving in two runs of his own in the win. For Spring Valley, Chandler Mylan went two-for-two with a double, and Daniel Brandon went two-for-four with a double.
