WVU BASEBALL: Kansas sweeps weekend baseball series with Mountaineers

By

From staff reports

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The West Virginia University baseball team pounded out 18 hits Sunday — and junior second baseman Billy Fleming became just the second Mountaineer ever to hit for the cycle — but it wasn’t enough to beat Kansas. The Jayhawks beat the Mountaineers, 9-8, at Hoglund Ballpark to sweep the three-game series.

The Jayhawks (33-21, 15-9 Big 12) went ahead to stay in the bottom of the sixth. Trailing 5-4, Kansas scored five runs in that inning to take the lead. West Virginia answered with a run in the seventh and two in the eighth, but it wasn’t enough. The Mountaineers (27-20, 9-11 Big 12) stranded 14 on Sunday.

Fleming finished 4 for 6 on Sunday with three runs and two RBI. Bob Spangler was the only other WVU player to hit for the cycle, accomplishing his feat in 1998. WVU’s next game is Tuesday at 2 p.m. versus Maryland.
