PREP BASEBALL: Riverside rolls to sectional title

By

From Staff Reports

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Cameron Norris hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to seal a 10-0 win against Ripley (20-13) and deliver the Region 4, Section 2 baseball title to Riverside (20-10). The Warriors Riverside scored five runs in the second, three in the fourth, and two in the fifth to capture the school’s second consecutive sectional championship.

Norris, who signed recently to play at West Virginia State, also pitched five innings striking out eight.

First year coach for the Warriors, Pat Vogelsang, was confident in his team, “We’re walking tall right now. If you put the Detroit Tigers out on the field, we would expect to win.” The Warriors defeated Capital once and Ripley twice to advance to regional play next week. Vogelsang said he isn’t content with his team’s accomplishments just yet.

“This is the plaque we already have,” he said, “Our goal is to put the regional plaque in our trophy case.”

Hurricane 21, Lincoln County 0 — Redskins pitchers held Panthers hitters to only one hit in a shortened, five-inning Class AAA Region 4, Section 3 game. Hurricane pitcher J.T. Rogoszewski struck out 11 Lincoln County hitters on his way to the win. From the plate, Tate Brock went 2 for 2 with a double and a three-run home run, driving in five runs total. Sam Basler also went two-for-two with a grand slam.

Nitro 10, St. Albans 0 — The Wildcats’ Kip Brewer struck out nine Red Dragon hitters, allowing only two hits in the six-inning shutout in the Class AAA Region 4, Section 2 tournament. Nitro’s Dylan Slack went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI, while Matt Harrison went 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI.
