120 to graduate from Mountaineer ChalleNGe Academy
KINGWOOD, W.Va. (AP) — The Mountaineer ChalleNGe Academy is sending another group of cadets into the community.
The academy will hold a ceremony for 120 teenagers from 33 counties Friday at Camp Dawson in Kingwood.
The National Guard program uses a military model to help at-risk children finish their high school educations by completing a 22-week volunteer program that includes leadership training.
The diplomas open many doors for graduates that had previously been closed, including higher education and military service. Often, the cadets qualify for PROMISE scholarships for college.
