Newborns at CAMC Women and Children's Hospital were decked out in purple caps as part of an effort to increase awareness of child abuse. Crying is the No. 1 trigger for shaking a baby and causing serious harm, hospital officials said.
Local crafters were asked to knit, crochet or loom purple caps for newborns to remind parents about the period of PURPLE crying, an acronym for the normal, but frustrating period of increased crying that babies experience in the first few weeks and months of life.
The hats were distributed at the hospital as part of a community awareness effort designed to reduce the instances of shaken baby syndrome. Visit www.clickforbabies.org for more information.
