Meats are slowly smoked and business is brisk in a low-key, family-friendly environment.
Everything is made on site, including an assortment of barbecue sauces. The house sauce is a garlic/tomato base. There are also some unexpected offerings like chicken livers, fried green tomatoes and collard greens. Her mother, Wilma Tincher, makes cakes and pies from scratch.
She said folks are surprised to find such fine barbecue in West Virginia when that seems to be a specialty of more southern states.
Specialties of Barnyard BBQ will soon be known by an even wider audience when the restaurant is featured on television in the spring.
Just like the launching of the restaurant and the visit from the Globetrotters, the television appearance came about by happenstance.
Barnyard BBQ is to be featured on the Travel Channel's "BBQ Crawl" this spring with host Danielle Bennett Dimovski, who is known as Diva Q in barbecue circles.
She was passing through the area last October on the way to the New River Gorge to film a fishing trip, Tincher said. While in the Teays Valley area, someone recommended she stop by Barnyard BBQ.
Tincher expects to hear soon when the show will air.
"They filmed here six to eight hours," Tincher said. "She said it was one of her best shows. She emailed me yesterday and said we would hear from them soon."
Barnyard BBQ is located at 1101 Hospital Drive in Teays Valley. For more information about the restaurant, go to www.thebarnyardbbq.com or call 304-964-3322.
