Scattered throughout the Kanawha Valley, private neighborhood swimming pools will soon open for the season.
Those with memberships in their respective pools say they offer a sense of community as well as opportunities for leisure and exercise.
Greenbrier Pool at 5103 Chesterfield Ave. in Kanawha City is a 25-meter pool with a spacious shallow end and diving well as well as a separate baby pool that is gated. Amenities include a basketball court and a picnic area with gas grills and tables. The pool has been in continuous operation since 1955 and was rebuilt in 2003.
"Last year we had 185 members, and we could go to 220," said Kara Duncan, president of the pool board. "We work hard to make sure the pool is up and running. It's in excellent condition. I've been a member for over 30 years."
More members mean more cash for sprucing up the facility, she said. Goals for this year include upgrading bathrooms and buying more lounge chairs for the pool deck.
The cost of joining includes a $1,000 initial fee plus $475 a year for a family or $365 for a single membership. The initial $1,000 may be paid over a five-year period and it includes shares of stock that may be transferred to a family member or with the sale of a house, Duncan said.
An open house/ice cream social is set for 6 to 8 p.m. May 24 for those who wish to tour the facility. The event is free and open to the public. Official opening day is May 25. Go to www.greenbrier

South Hills Swim Club has been a hub of the community for many years, said Amy Keith, who serves on the board.
She was a just toddler when her family first took her there. Now she and husband, Steven, go there with their children, ages 10, 8 and 5. She said it's a great spot for leisure and fitness.
"It's like a rock in our neighborhood where people bond and have fun," she said. "We have a great swim team."
South Hills Swim Club was established about 1955 and is kept in topnotch condition, said Will Moore, board president. Membership was full last year and 10 people were on a waiting list.
Amenities include a 50-meter pool with five lanes, a baby pool, volleyball court, basketball court, snack bar and picnic shelter. The pool is located on Roderick Road, which is off Parkwood Road. The cost to join includes an initial fee and stock purchase of $600. Annual membership fee is $400. Go to www.southhillsswimclub.com for more information.
