"I've always been kind of crafty," she said. "It's my creative outlet. I love decorating and baking. I've turned my love for parties into a business."
Her husband, Matthew, 33, is an accountant. Kara, Matthew, Peyton and Emma leave for New York on Saturday with plans to do some sightseeing.
"We'll do some kid-friendly stuff," she said. "We'll go to Central Park and FAO Schwarz."
Travel expenses and lodging will be covered by the show.
"They pay for our hotel and we will be reimbursed for gas," she said. "We chose to drive. Monday I go to NBC studios for rehearsal. I will re-create Peyton's party on the set on Monday evening. Two other finalists will be on the show. We will all three be re-creating our parties and one of the 'Today Show' hosts will pick the winner."
She was told one contestant from California will re-create her daughter's birthday party. Another contestant from Arizona is to re-create a going away party she had for her two daughters before they moved to another state.
The show is to air live 9 a.m. Tuesday, when the winner will receive a trophy and "bragging rights," she said.
